KONVENT INTEL·LIGÈNCIA ARTIFICIAL

L’ús de la Intel·ligència Artificial (IA) i les dades explícites en la creació artística és un tema que recentment ha agafat força. Si bé alguns ho veuen com una nova frontera per a l’expressió artística, altres es mostren escèptics sobre el paper de la tecnologia en l’art. 

El programa de residència “Konvent IA” té com a objectiu reunir un grup divers d’artistes i pensadores que utilitzin tècniques d’aprenentatge automàtic o dades explícites per generar el seu treball. Pretenem fomentar espais de trobada on poder investigar les contribucions d’aquestes tecnologies a la creació artística, generar coneixement col·lectiu al voltant de tècniques i mètodes, i obrir un espai d’experimentació, reflexió crítica i diàleg al voltant de l’ètica de la IA, el posthumanisme i la relació entre tecnologia i art.

Les residències de Konvent tenen l’objectiu de convertir-se en una plataforma d’ajuda per a persones artistes i creadores oferint les condicions d’espai i concentració adequades per a la investigació en un entorn únic com és l’antiga colònia tèxtil de Cal Rosal.

Enguany plategem un nou format de residències en que proposem 7 convocatòries diferents amb dates específiques per a cada convocatòria. La nostra intenció és visibilitzar i aprofundir en certes temàtiques, disciplines i contextos que creiem que requereixen d’especial atenció dins la contemporaneïtat que vivim, així com oferir la possibilitat d’establir vincles amb d’altres comunitats, espais i festivals. 

En l’edició de residències 2023 hem escollit temes que personalment ens remouen, en representació de la diversitat que existeix dins la creació artística i la nostra societat, escollint fer èmfasi en col·lectivitats i disciplines històricament poc representades, i assumint el compromís que ens és donat com a centre de i per l’art i la cultura contemporànies, per tal d’evolucionar com a poble i societat.

FINALITAT I OBJECTIUS

• Reunir artistes i pensadores que utilitzin la IA i/o dades en el seu treball, representant múltiples disciplines.

• Proporcionar un espai dedicat perquè aquestes artistes i pensadores creïn i reflexionin.

• Facilitar un espai de debat sobre el potencial de les IA i les dades en la creació artística, explorant tècniques i mètodes, així com l’ètica d’aquestes tecnologies, posant especial atenció a l’ús de IAs, el posthumanisme i el processament de dades en l’art.Jonas Johansson

Solar Zodiac Cancer: He looks to be much quiet, reserved, retiring and highly sensitive individual. He is usually versatile, changeable and moody. He is subject to frequent “ups and downs” in attitudes and vocations. He is none the less determined in his goals and opinions. He normally does have a fertile imagination and dramatic ability to take others’ ideas and promote them for their own purposes. His highly receptive nature makes him easily influenced by his environment. He is blessed with a retentive memory. He usually is industrious, prudent, frugal, sympathetic and highly sensitive to any criticism. There is love for the home, mother and the past. Often he accumulates a lot of money.

The Paramnesias are a series of attempts to reconstruct the memories and the prophecies of my childhood using AI. For the residency, I’ll be working with two astral chart readings recorded in Nepal in the eighties.

Maria Jover i Pujol i Gerard Franch Lopera

Berenguera

Performers and creators Gerard Franch and Maria Jover gather to create an artistic piece about the life of Berenguera de Vilamur -a Catalan trobairitz of the Middle Ages- by taking advantage of new technologies and starting a discussion on the scene in relation with what we have always been told about our history and heritage.

We will be structuring our work just before entering a more “theatrical place” following September (prior to our premier in October in Fira Mediterrània festival). In this sense, we will be testing our scenic devices; different scenes and materials that will shape out the final composition of “Berenguera”. The work will be focused on a physical experimentation related with all the textual content produced by ChatGPT and OpenAI API’s Playground. We will also be focused on the technological dimension of the project (the usage of cameras, projections, sounding devices, etc.), to deepen in the story through the documentary/archive side of the proposition. Working on the concept of “alternative truth” and its philosophical derives will also be a main point of our stage in KonventZero.

Vitling is a Berlin-based artist using code to create endless generative audio and visual work.

I will be exploring the concept of generating an endless stream of speech radio about nonexistent topics using probabilistic methods to create randomised prompts for AI language models connected to speech synthesis engines.

Tatiana Afanador López & Judit Parés Padrós

Rompiendo la caja negra: propiocepción y wetware para una ética de la AI

Tatiana Afanador López (1983, Bogotá) Dra en filosofía contemporánea & Judit Parés Padrós (1994, Gurb) graduada en ingeniería y diseño industrial. Desde 2017 investigan el cyborg desde su dimensión metafórica, biológica y tecnológica.

La falta de transparencia en la AI implica que no hay forma de explicar los pasos que esta tecnología siguió para actuar y dado que no se sabe lo que hace la AI, entonces tampoco se le puede exigir que responda por sus acciones y por sus sesgos. Es así como nos enfrentamos con la metáfora de la caja negra que pocas veces es cuestionada, aunque impide la transparencia y genera desconfianza ética sobre la AI. Para ello, proponemos una investigación para hallar un método de aprendizaje arte-factual. Para diseñar este método vamos a hacer dos experimentos colectivos en el Konvent. Por un lado, realizaremos un experimento para hackear la propiocepción, con el fin de elaborar especulaciones ficcionales entorno a una lógica senso-motora de la AI. Por otro lado, organizaremos un experimento usando un dispositivo que nos permite ver las ondas cerebrales para descubrir criterios éticos a partir de la noción de wetware.

The lack of transparency in IA implies that there is no way to explain the steps that this technology uses to follow to act, and since we don’t know what the IA does, then it cannot be held accountable for its actions and biases. This is how we are confronted with the metaphor of the black box that is rarely questioned, although it prevents transparency and generates ethical distrust about IA. For this, we propose an investigation to find an art-factual learning method. To design this method we will perform two collective experiments at Konvent. On the one hand, we will conduct an experiment to hack the proprioception sense, in order to elaborate fictional speculations around a sense-motor logic of the IA. And on the other hand, we will organize an experiment using a device that allows us to see the brain waves in order to discover ethical criteria based on the notion of wetware.

Marta Delatte

Miratges i flors

Dr. Marta Delatte (she/her) is a Barcelona-based Internet scholar and Data Scientist interested in designing feminist processes for accountability.

Her research focuses on designing for the participation of underrepresented communities in online spaces and mitigating gender gaps of participation both in organizational and technological systems.

Under her leadership as founder since 2014, the independent reach group Liquen Data Lab has worked on research and curatorial projects with a strong focus on data justice.

She is a gardening enthusiast, her latest digital project “The Computer Garden” (2022) seeks to establish a dialogue between two of her main passions: making accessible the prevention of gender-based digital violence through gardening practices and vernacular knowledge about flowers.

Dr. Delatte holds an undergraduate degree in Journalism, a Master’s in Music, and Ph.D. in Digital Media. She currently works as a Digital Communications advisor for the Barcelona city council.

I’m developing a project on AI, literature and performing arts in collaboration with visual artist Alba G Corral and we are also starting conversations with the people of taller Estampa to help us with the technical work. The idea is to generate probable conversations on followers and landscapes between Mercè Rodoreda and Caterina Albert, two major catalan writers that lived in the XX century that have nature as an important symbolical theme in their literature and lived experiences.
